Create your first portfolio

A portfolio is a group of projects steered together, with one way of measuring their progress. Every project belongs to a portfolio, so a portfolio must exist before you can add projects. Only administrators create portfolios.

A portfolio consists of:

  • Maturity model: the categories and levels projects are scored on. Chosen when the portfolio is created and fixed for its lifetime.
  • Funnel: the phases a project moves through, for example Idea to Concept, Concept to Product, Product to Market, Scale.
  • Gates: key milestones, for example MVP at level 5.

See Portfolios, funnels and gates for how they work together.

  1. Open Organization settings from the organization menu in the sidebar and choose the Portfolios tab.

  2. Click Create first portfolio.

  3. Enter a Name and, optionally, a Description.

  4. Choose the Maturity model. Scale Platform ships with two:

    • Scale Maturity Model (GROW) for new products, services and business ideas moving toward product-market fit.
    • Scale Maturity Model (OPS) for operational development and transformation work.

Read each model’s purpose in the dialog. This choice cannot be changed later; if you steer both kinds of work, create one portfolio per model.

  5. Under Funnel and gates, keep Model defaults. You can also copy the funnel and gates from an existing portfolio, or start empty and define them yourself.

  6. Click Add portfolio.

The portfolio opens on its dashboard. From here you can adjust its Funnel and Gates, and, under Access, make it private to a chosen group of people. Portfolios are public to the whole organization by default.
